Commissioned by the Babraham Campus Engineering department, Sharman Grimwade Ltd carried out a detailed feasibility study to assess the viability of upgrading an existing CHP unit serving the district heating system, and integration of a new absorption chiller. Proposals for a new 1MW CHP engine and a 600kW absorption chiller were implemented to match calculated site loads, and within the first year the system reduced site running costs by around £400,000 in reduced energy consumption, and considerably reduced the amount of electricity imported from the national grid.
